Hundreds of asylum seekers placed in detention in January

MORE than 300 asylum seekers trying to get to Australia by boat have been placed in detention in the first 25 days of the year.

The latest boat arrival, the seventh of the year, was carrying 106 people when it was intercepted by ACV Ocean Protector east-south-east of Ashmore Islands last night.

The people were taken to Christmas Island for health and security checks.
