Huge response to Music Bowl comeback

SITTING atop the water tower, Chris "Banksy" Banks looked out over the sea of people waiting patiently for Midnight Oil to take to the stage.

The year was 1985 and the Music Bowl was Rockhampton's "venue of all venues".

"That was definitely a highlight," the Sea FM breakfast radio host recalled.

The Morning Bulletin's front-page report on the possible comeback of the popular outdoor entertainment arena sparked a trip down memory lane for Banksy yesterday.

EARLIER: Could the Music Bowl make a comeback?

A guitarist himself, Banksy said he had played on the Music Bowl stage with his band Pulse a number of times.

"I was 'spewing' when they closed it," he said.

Banksy and his co-host Todd Stevens bridged the idea with their listeners live on air yesterday, receiving an overwhelming response.

Todd, who has only lived in Rockhampton for eight months, said the majority of people were all for bringing back the bowl.

"I only found out what it (the Music Bowl) was this morning and already I'm very passionate," he said.

The duo said it would be a great opportunity to get bands to come to Rockhampton, rather than bypassing the city for Mackay or Gladstone.

If the venue were to receive a revamp, Todd said he would gladly perform My Heart Will Go On on the recorder for opening night.

However, Banksy said he would prefer a line-up of all the classic Aussie bands that had performed there in past years, including Cold Chisel and Hunters and Collectors.

"There's so much history," he said. "Even if they were going to demolish it, let there be one last hoorah."
