How to tell if you’re a risky driver

QUEENSLAND Police are never short of a horror story, especially when it comes to witnessing risky behaviours performed by motorists while driving.

We caught up with some police officers across the state to find out some of the craziest things they have seen drivers doing while behind the wheel.

The usual suspects popped up like speeding, failing to indicate, not wearing a seatbelt, drink driving and inattention, but we've narrowed it down to the top six craziest situations cops have seen on our roads.

According to Gumtree there are 12 types of Australian drivers and it seems police officers are catching a lot of 'rise n' shiners'. Unless you're a 'ruler' you might need to think about changing your ways or risk getting caught out.

Here are the top six:

1.       Mobile phones - Facebook, Snapchat, social media, surfing the web, taking photos etc.

2.       Doing work on an iPad while driving at 100km on the highway

3.       Sexual acts

4.       Putting on makeup

5.       Brushing their hair

6.       Eating cereal from a bowl with a spoon. And eating anything at all.

Savvy CEO Bill Tsouvalas said risky driver or not, ensuring you are correctly insured while on the road was essential.

"Because it's compulsory, it's such a competitive environment and there are lots of car insurance providers offering you protection," he said.

"What people need to understand is that car insurance can vary considerably from insurer to insurer so you need to get what is right for you."

He said the magic number was three.

"It's wise to get a minimum of three car insurance quotes from three different companies at least," Mr Tsouvalas said.

"Keep in mind you get what you pay for and not all insurance is equal which means comparing prices is important, but comparing the product disclosure statement is just as important."
