How the Queensland and NSW players rated in Origin II

MAROONS

1. Billy Slater - Didn't have to do too much with the likes of Boyd, Inglis, Thurston and Cronk on fire. 5½

2. Darius Boyd - Scored his third Origin double, and linked up superbly with a fully-fit Johnathan Thurston. 8

3. Greg Inglis - Given more ball and Queensland reaped the rewards, threatening the Blues defence often and scoring a brilliant try. 6½

4. Justin Hodges - Was solid on his right side of the field, as the Maroons had more success down the other edge. 6

5. Brent Tate - Eked out 112m and it should have been more after being unfairly sent to the sin bin for seemingly copping a Trent Merrin punch. 6

6. Johnathan Thurston - How the Maroons must have been overjoyed to see this genius back to his best, despite being hospitalised on Tuesday night with a stomach bug. 7½

7. Cooper Cronk - Caught debutant Nathan Merritt out a few time with his brilliant kicking game. Combined well with Thurston and looked in control. 7½

8. Matt Scott - After being maligned in game one, this man had a point to proved and he was fearless all game, making 170m. 9

9. Cameron Smith (c) - Set up Sam Thaiday for crucial early try 3 minutes in, and kicked and ran very well for the rest of the night. 8½

10. Nate Myles - Combined with Scott to dominate Blues forwards. 131m, 29 tackles. 8

11. Chris McQueen - Solid, but not spectacular during his time on the ground. 5

12. Sam Thaiday - Much improved performance. Was a handful early. 6½

13. Corey Parker - Not far behind Matt Scott, in fact only one metre with the yards he made. And he got some great offloads away. 8½

Interchange :

14. Daly Cherry-Evans - Not much this precociously-talented kid can't do. Came on and played in the back row and kept up his brilliant kicking and passing game. 6

15. Matt Gillett - Strong running and solid in defence all night, with 22 tackles. 6½

16. Josh Papalii - Plenty of impact after coming on, adding a new dimension to an already-dominant forward pack. 6

17. Ben Teo - Solid without being dominant. 5

BLUES

1. Josh Dugan - Lacked the impact expected of him, besides one bust late in the first half. Dropped a simple kick early in the second half. 5

2. Brett Morris - Quiet first half, but brilliant finish to score just inside the sideline from a Robbie Farah kick late in the game. 6

3. Michael Jennings - Some crucial errors. Late hit on Johnathan Thurston gave away a penalty early, and made a poor pass again giving away the ball midway through the second stanza. 4

4. Josh Morris - Defensively very good on Greg Inglis once again, but never really threatened with the ball. 5½

5. Nathan Merritt - Was targeted from a methodical Cooper Cronk kicking game and was given no clear-cut scoring opportunities. Debut to forget. 4

6. James Maloney - Was a shadow of the game he produced in game one. 5

7. Mitchell Pearce - Kicking game rarely put the Maroons under pressure. 4½

8. Paul Gallen (c) - Another tireless effort, but could not stop the Maroons' juggernaut in the first half. 6½

9.Robbie Farah - Produced some good kicks when needed, including one that led to a Brett Morris try, and played tough with a fractured cheek bone. 6½

10. Aaron Woods - Was out-enthused by a mobile Queensland back row on his Origin debut, and didn't make the metres he needed to make. 4

11. Ryan Hoffman - Tackled his heart out but was nullified in attack. 5

12. Luke Lewis - Made some nice little busts, but struggled after injuring his shoulder in the second half. 5½

13. Greg Bird - Trysaver on Corey Parker early, wrapping up ball while over line, and put in a whole-hearted effort like he usually does. 5½

Interchange:

14. Anthony Watmough - Good footwork slightly troubled the Maroons at times. 5

15. Andrew Fifita - Took on more responsibility after given more minutes in his second Origin game. 5½

16. Trent Merrin - Nice offloading and good yards through the middle. 5½

17. Josh Reynolds - Came on after the Maroons had done plenty of damage. 4
