How a whim helped change Harry's life

HAVE you ever tried something on a whim? Ipswich's Harry Harms did and it changed his life forever.

The USQ theatre student was in his final year at Ipswich Grammar School when he saw his school was looking for students to take part in a musical production of Fame.

"I didn't know what to expect, but my dad thought I should give it a go," Harry explained.

"I had never been on stage before and never performed in front of an audience, but there was something about it I enjoyed.

"I didn't think I would have that much fun."

Acting then became his passion and Harry moved to Toowoomba the following year to study a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Theatre) at USQ.

Now in the final year of his degree, the self-described late-bloomer is determined to make a name for himself as an actor.

"Acting has really transformed me in the best way possible," he said.

"I love to entertain people and make others happy.

"I get a real adrenaline rush whenever I am on stage and being able to look at the world differently through someone else's eyes."

Harry is one of 10 third year students preparing to take to the stage for a production of The House of Bernarda Alba at the USQ Arts Theatre, Toowoomba, later this month.

The classic Spanish play will be Harry's seventh USQ student production he has been involved in and his final one before he graduates.

"It is probably my biggest challenge to date," he said.

"The fact I am playing Maria Josefa, an 80-year-old woman in the play, straight away throws up many unique challenges, but it's a good chance for me to show my versatility.

"I'm just going let my imagination flow and put it all out there."

The House of Bernarda Alba premieres August 24 and runs until August 26. For more information, visit artsworx.usq.edu.au.
