Man hailed a hero after saving resident from burning flat

A RESIDENT of Gladstone's Palm Lodge has been hailed a hero, after he sprinted to save a man from a burning flat.

A fierce middle-of-the-night fire gutted the building, leaving the three residents homeless.

Emergency services were called to the single men's accommodation on Off Lane in Gladstone's CBD just before 1am on Sunday, after a fire took hold.

The man was unwilling to talk about his heroism, but admitted he had saved a life.

"There's no doubt, he would have been gone if I hadn't gone in there," he said.

"It was bad - I never want to see anything like that ever again."

A spokesman for Queensland Ambulance Service said a male patient with burns to the face, arms and feet had been transported to Gladstone Hospital.

At 1pm on Sunday, the 36-year-old was transported by air from Gladstone to Brisbane.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Fire and Rescue Service said three crews attended after a call from QAS at 1.46am, and the fire was put out just after 2am.

QFRS and Gladstone Police officers were investigating the cause of the fire on Sunday.

Specialised officers from the Scene of the Crime Office also travelled from Rockhampton to assess the scene.

Two men who had shared the gutted flat with the victim had been working nightshift when the fire took hold.

They paid tribute to the young man who raced into the burning unit to save the man.

"It would have taken some guts, no doubt," one man said.

Palm Lodge provides short and long-term accommodation to single men.

The owners of the property were not available for comment.
