Swimmers watch in horror as whale calf struggles in nets

SHOCKED swimmers have called for shark nets to be removed during the whale migration season after watching from the beach as a whale calf struggled in nets off the Sunshine Coast.

Noosa icon Bill "Hey Bill" Watson told the ABC he and other morning swimmers noticed the whale calf struggling in the nets about 7.30am.

He said the mother whale appeared to be trying to free the calf, and Noosa lifeguards arrived at the scene to try and help.

Mr Watson said the whale calf was able to free itself, but said swimmers watching the drama unfold believed the shark nets should be removed during the migration season to prevent such incidents.
