Hornets primed to chase down Valley

DAN Wilson is not sure if he really did say Valley declared 100 runs short last weekend.

The quote was attributed to him by his sipper Geoff Paulsen the day after Valley had declared on 297 at Baxter Oval.

Thursday's rain has not altered Wilson's belief the runs are attainable when play resumes for day two today.

"I thought it was a generous declaration given the way the wicket was," Paulsen said.

"It's a third day wicket given we played a one-dyer on it the week before.

"The rain shouldn't alter it too much.

"I don't think it will play too much of a part if we bat well."

The good news for the Hornets is they have all 10 wickets in hand, with Wilson not out 17 and Mitchell Weatherhead on eight.

"It is the third game in a row now we've had to bat before stumps, for half an hour to an hour.

"It's never fun as opening batters.

"Previously we've done a good job until five minutes before stumps.

"So we were quite conscious of that last week."

In more good news for the Hornets, Valley will be without Usman Khawaja and Mark Steketee, who are on Prime Minister's XI duty.

The bad news for the Hornets is Valley may well have the services of Queensland fast bowlers Luke Feldman and Jack Wildermuth.

"I expect Queensland will want Feldman to have a day with the red ball before Queensland's Sheffield Shield match," Wilson said.

"But if we do what we should, we can get the runs.

"If the ball is there to hit, you've got to hit it.

"It doesn't matter if it's the first ball or the 100th.

"We've got to take a positive mindset and if we're still batting at 5pm, we know we'll have the 270-odd runs needed.

"If someone gets in, they need to score 100.

"If we do, we should get the runs."
