Hornets pair named for Australia, coach hopes more to follow
ANOTHER Sunday, and another match-up against quality national-level competition for the Ipswich/Logan Hornets' Katherine Raymont Shield outfit.
Wayne Bichel would not have it any other way.
The Hornets coach has watched his fledgling side respond time and again to the various challenges thrown to them so far in their maiden campaign in the Queensland Cricket top tier.
Now with selection in various representative squads on the line, Bichel has challenged his players to make the most of their opportunities Sunday against a potent Sandgate-Redcliffe bowling attack.
Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat stars Jemma Barsby and Georgia Prestwidge will lead the attack on the Hornets' top order tomorrow.
But rather than shirk at the challenge, Bichel believes his young side can again respond as it has previously.
"Another challenge, and one we're looking forward to,” he said.
"They'll come at us with the ball this time. Previously it's been with the bat. These are quality bowlers, and that's a good thing. It will be about testing ourselves this weekend.”
For the bowlers, Tess Cooper - yet another Fire and Heat member - will be the prized wicket on offer should she pad up for the hosts
Bichel said a strong showing against proven bowlers Barsby and Prestwidge, and a quality batswoman in Cooper would go a long way toward securing Queensland selection for some of his key players.
"Kira (Holmes) helped her selection push when she came up against (Fire and Heat player) Sammy-Jo Johnston,” he said.
"There's a number of teams the girls are vying for selection in, and this weekend will be their chance to put their best foot forward.”
Two key Hornets have already been confirmed as inclusions for the national under-18 championships, with Ruth Johnston and Georgia Voll this week named in the Cricket Australia under-16 squad.
The Queensland under-18s are set to be announced on October 22, while some Hornets will also be considered for Northern Territory and Queensland Country selection to be released before the end of the month.
Bendigo and Ballarat will host the national championships on January 14-24.
