Hornets dominate selections at U15 Female State Challenge

AN IMPRESSIVE 16 Ipswich/Logan Hornets players will be present at the Under-15 Female State Challenge beginning today at the Ipswich Grammar School fields at Brassall.

Nine Hornets regulars will turn out for Southern Blaze at the three-day carnival, while seven will pull on the colours of the Western Swelter.

Coastal Burners, Central Infernos, City Fever and Northern Flames are the other sides sourced from across Queensland.

The new-look State Challenge format has combined feeder zones from the traditional school-based representative system.

Darling Downs and Metro South-West have combined to form the Western Swelter. South-East Queensland and Gold Coast are now the Southern Blaze.

It is a decision Hornets women's coach Wayne Bichel believes will only benefit female cricket players in the future.

"This new pathway is taking it away from the schools and going through the clubs,” Bichel said.

"A number of us at the Hornets have been around juniors for a long time, and we believe what they're doing with the new pathways is really good.”

With inclusion in the Les Kinnane Carnival early next year as well as the formation of a female Lord's Taverner's competition, the representative pathway for women's cricket has never been better.

The six representative sides will play predominantly T20 fixtures, with one 40-over match also on the schedule.

The most interesting meeting will come in round two, when the Blaze and Swelter face off.

Blaze will be supported by Junior Director of Coaching for the Hornets Leanne Bichel, while the Swelter have Anthony Clark in their corner.

At the conclusion of the carnival, an Under-15 Queensland side will be named.

An Under-13 selection carnival will be held in January, with a development squad named in lieu of a state side.

Southern Blaze: Jordan Spilsbury, Hailey Hall, Chloe Neuendorf, Keely Freiberg, Macy Hauser, Carla Truloff, Hannah Lehmann, Emily Evetts, Carl Grieve

Western Swelter: Olivia Winter, Bridget Peden, Ella Harvey, Lucy Neumann, Jaimie-Lee Strang, Rachael
