Hornets confident first win will give club a lift

RESULTS-WISE, it has been a grim start to the season for both the Ipswich Logan Hornets first and second grade sides.

Neither has posted a win from seven games across all three formats.

The Hornets second grade side went close against Redlands last weekend, losing by just three runs on the first innings.

While Toombul present an equally stern challenge this weekend, Hornets second grade skipper Wayne Jones is confident a win is not far off.

"It was a very good game last game," he said.

"We played good cricket and the players have been improving all year.

"We've come a long way.

"If we play to our best we'll win."

The Hornets seconds are boosted by the return from injury of fast bowler Sean Lutter, who is unlikely to remain long in the team before he is elevated to the top grade.

He will open the bowling alongside former Brothers quick Darren Clark.

But it is the progress of the likes of Clark, Dan O'Keefe, Brodie Dwyer and Rowan Lutter that gives Jones the most confidence his team will be celebrating a win sooner rather than later.

"It should be our goal in second grade to be pushing the A graders for their spots," Jones (pictured) said.

"I'm sure by the end of the season one or two will be in A grade.

"Brodie has put his head down and is really determined.

"Rowan is only 20 but has turned the corner and is more consistent.

"Darren is more mature and knows what to do.

"He leads the attack."

The other great improvement on this year's team, compared to last, is the bond they have developed.

"As a team we're enjoying each other's company," Jones said.

"We believe in each other a bit more and muck around a bit off the field together."

It gives Jones confidence the long-term future of the club is in safe hands.

"In five or 10 years time these guys will be in A grade making semi-finals.

"If I can develop them the same as Geoff Paulsen in A grade we could be sitting back enjoying a renaissance in Ipswich cricket."

In contrast to the top two grades the Hornets thirds have won both their opening two matches and get the chance to make it three from three against Toombul at Toombul.
