Home invasion an app motivation

THREE o'clock on a cool, quiet Ipswich morning, Michael Davis shudders awake as he hears the back door of his home slide open.

He jumps out of bed and bolts into the kitchen to see the door open and his first thoughts are: Are they already in the house? Are they going to get my wife?

"I can't explain how bad the fear was. It was just an awful feeling," Mr Davis said.

"It turns out they had run down the side of the house, jumped the fence and were gone, but I stood there looking at the door and couldn't move for 10 minutes."

Michael and Lucy Davis have been living in Camira for about five years and retired at the beginning of last year.

The attempted burglary changed their lives.

Reports of the abduction, rape and murder of Jill Meagher in Melbourne steeled their resolve to help others be helped by others.

"Lucy and I started thinking if that was the fear we were feeling in our own kitchen - we felt so alone - how would someone feel out on the street," Mr Davis said.

"So we put our heads together and came up with Guardian Duress Alert App.

"When you look around you, everyone's got a smartphone so we decided to build our own app.

When you look around you, everyone's got a smartphone so we decided to build our own app.

"We contacted a company in Milton called Creative Intersection and they said: 'You write the story and we'll put it together.'

"Apple tested it every which way but lose; they really made sure it worked. And in the end, even though it was frustrating, it gives us confidence."

If you're in trouble, you press a button on the app and a message is sent to five friends' phones and an email goes to their computer.

The alert is upgraded every five seconds so your friends can track you and you can track them finding you.

"I really feel strongly about this. We really believe we're going to save someone's life," Mr Davis said.
