Home movies capture rich history of Ipswich

HOME movie enthusiasts have been called on to search their collections for some hidden treasures for the city.

Ipswich Library Service has called for residents to share some of their home movies for the Picture Ipswich project, a multimedia archive documenting Ipswich's rich history.

Tourism and Libraries Committee chairman David Pahlke said home movies offered a glimpse into the city's history from a unique perspective - the person behind the camera.

"Home movies are an extraordinary and rare insight into the lives of the people who make them," Cr Pahlke said.

"Captured for fun and memories, these films often document life in all its glory from major moments such as weddings and birthdays to the richly mundane beauty of a happy family picnic or a new car."

Picture Ipswich is a digital history of Ipswich displaying images and stories of its people, families, places, events and way of life. The database is diverse, with a variety of formats including documents and books presented as PDFs, photographs presented as JPEGs, audio files presented as MP3 files, PowerPoint presentations and some moving pictures presented as MP4 files.

If you have a home movie that would be of interest, contact the Library's Digital Archivist on 3810 7272.
