Home invasion 'up there with murder'

DAVID McLintock's grandmother lives in constant fear after being a victim of a home invasion.

Viewing countless stories of similar invasions has angered and inspired him to petition for mandatory sentencing for home invaders.

The Goovigen resident has begun an e-petition and is calling for signatures to bring pressure to bear on lawmakers.

So far 160 people have signed, but he's hoping for thousands more.

"We need to be able to go to bed at night knowing that if someone is silly enough to break into our homes, they will do the time for it," Mr McLintock said.

He said the sentencing of jail time should be five years for first-level offences without a weapon or violence, 15 years for second-level offences for entering a dwelling with a weapon but no use of violence, and for third-level, entering a home with a weapon and using violence, 25 years jail.

"As far as I'm concerned it's a crime that's up there with murder; they're destroying people's lives," he said.

Mr McLintock's grandmother's life changed after she was a victim of a home invasion.

She had moved to Rockhampton for her retirement.

While watching TV in her lounge room one night, someone broke into her home through the back door.

"They proceeded to collect all her valuables from her bedroom," he said.

"She came upon them when coming out to make a cup of tea. The result of that was every window had bars put on them and her home was turned into a prison to keep criminals out."

Mr McLintock's petition was posted on the Queensland Parliament's website last month.

"It's time for every Queenslander to make a stand," he said.

"We can do this by supporting this e-petition and directing our politicians that we are no longer willing to be victims in our own homes."
