FOR Singleton bull rider Cody Heffernan there is no easy way to tame a bucking bull for eight seconds - "you just do whatever it takes".

On the current national standings, Heffernan is the top ranked rider in the PBR.

For the second straight year he will be applying his trade at Emerald PBR's Rural Weekly Series leg, which kicks off in just over two weeks.

He said that going in with a clear head was key - then it was down to pure adrenaline and reactions.

"You have to have a clear mind but also make sure you are aggressive," 25-year-old Heffernan said.

"Once you nod your head for the gate to be opened it's all reaction - you just do whatever it takes to hang on.

"All riders have a set of moves to combat the bull who will go up and down, spin left or right - you just have to make that eight seconds, no matter how well you look doing it."

Heffernan was third at the Emerald event last year, and since then he has lifted his overall ranking after some stellar rides.

"I picked up third in Emerald last year, I was happy with a top three finish but disappointed not to win," he said.

"It was a good event, I enjoyed myself and this year's should be even better.

"Last year I finished fourth in the national standings and in the new season I am ranked first.

"I have won a couple of events, big ones in Mackay and Atherton - I have just rode consistently well - it has been good."

The PBR-sanctioned event swings into action on November 28 with some of the best professional riders from across the country.
