THE 12 Ferraris lining the entrance of this year's Motorclassica should have given some indication of the treasures that lay within the embrace of Melbourne's Royal Exhibition Building.

But even their fine form was no match for the hundreds of classic cars and motorcycles that captured the imagination both of purveyors of fine art and those just there for the champagne and canapés.

This year's event, the sixth offering, also served as the 50th anniversary of the supercar, Shelby Mustang and Ferrari Dino, and the 70th birthday of MV Augusta.

The elegant venue was a fine platform for motor vehicles and bikes that had been painstakingly restored and lovingly looked after, all in unbelievably pristine condition.

Some 500 exhibits worth more than $100million were on show, with the supercars exhibition including a $10million McLaren F1.

Daniel Ricciardo's stunning 1963 Porsche 911 Outlaw also shared the limelight with a classic 1929 Type 44 Bugatti, 1935 Cord 810 Beverly and ex-Vern Schuppan 1950s cream coloured Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing.

There was also place for the new to show their brilliance, with BMW's striking 3.0 CSL Hommage R concept car and the Mercedes-Maybach S600 also turning heads.
