Health expert warns 'get educated' after sex act in park

A WOMEN'S health expert is urging people to become more educated around sexual assault.

Wide Bay Women's Health Services counsellor Tanya Barich made the calls after an 18-year-old man was spared jail after having sex with a 14-year-old girl in Pialba park.

In another case, a Rockhampton woman was jailed for holding down her daughter while her partner raped the 15-year-old.

Ms Barich said cases such as these highlighted the need for conversations and education about consent.

"Someone under the age of 16 can't give informed consent," she said.

"There is no informed consent if you are drunk or drugged.

"Young people and every one need to be aware of the laws."

She said it was important young women also felt empowered to say no.

"Often they feel pressure (from their partner) that 'if you love me, you will' (have sex)," she said.

"We need to educate women to accept themselves."

Ms Barich said at the Hervey Bay service nearly every woman who passed through the doors had experienced some kind of sexual assault.

"There is a lot of it in domestic situations," she said.

Ms Barich said it was concerning the number of sexual assaults which occurred in a family setting.

"You are certainly meant to be safe with your partner and your own family," she said.

She said it was important for people to remember any kind of sexual activity without consent, including groping, was considered sexual assault.
