Cancer diagnosis changed teen's life

HE WAS a young fit boy just like any other who liked playing sports and having fun with his friends.

But a blood test changed his life.

Jack Mantova was diagnosed with leukaemia on December 12 last year.

After months of gruelling chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he was declared to be in remission.

And now the 17-year-old wants to help the organisation that helped him get through the ordeal, the Leukaemia Foundation.

He was named the Toowoomba ambassador of the group's upcoming event Light the Night.

Tomorrow night friends, families and work colleagues will light a lantern on a sunset walk in Queens Park (Frog's Hollow) to support blood cancer patients.

Each coloured lantern contains a tiny light and has a special meaning; white for blood cancer patients and survivors; blue for supporters and gold for those remembering a loved one lost.

Mr Mantova, who lives on a property outside of Clifton, said it was important that people supported the foundation.

"You never know when it might affect you," he said.

"Suddenly it happens and you realise why people do these walks and fundraisers.

"It's important that people help, leukaemia needs to be stopped."

His mother Linda Mantova said the Leukaemia Foundation made the journey so much easier for the family when they had other things to worry about.

"We've very appreciate of what the Leukaemia Foundation did all the way through," she said.
