Haul takes 3m ice hits off streets

POLICE say they've stopped three million potential hits of ice hitting the street after seizing about 370kg of ephedrine.

Two people have been arrested after a four-month investigation sparked by the discovery of ephedrine in a sea cargo consignment by Australian Border Force officers in March.

ABF officers located the ephedrine concealed in a metal canister. Another sea cargo consignment arrived in April carrying ephedrine concealed within wall tiles.

Following these detections, the ABF commenced Operation Accinge, a joint effort with the NSW Police Drug Squad to target the criminal syndicate responsible for the attempted importations.

As a result of the joint investigation, the ABF's Sydney Container Examination Facility targeted a consignment believed to be linked to the syndicate and located milking machines containing ephedrine hidden in silver foil packages.

Two Chinese nationals were subsequently arrested in a raid on a residential property in Western Sydney on Thursday. Both men are aged 25 and in Australia on legitimate visas, AAP reports.

They have been charged with attempting to import a commercial quantity of ephedrine and remanded in custody to face Parramatta Local Court on October 31.
