Hamish and Andy visit Rocky on their way to people's island

ROCKHAMPTON was hailing the self-proclaimed "King Mayors" of the People's Island yesterday as they arrived in town.

Unfortunately it was only an honorary title given to comedy duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, who spent the day in the Beef Capital on their way to Iron Island, a 4.5ha islet north of Rockhampton.

The pair have been given approval from Livingstone Shire Council to occupy the islet temporarily.

They have dubbed it the People's Island, and plan to crown themselves King Mayors.

Hamish said they were doing the trip purely to see "the new estate" close up.

"We want to get our footprints on it," he said.

"But we will take the people there eventually, by the end of the year we will take a fleet of people to colonise and probably one day secede from the mainland.

"We've joked on the show that James Packer will be building a casino on it to attract tourism - not that people need any more reasons to see the island, it already has two cows on it."

Andy said Hamish even wanted to camp there.

"He watches a lot of Survivor so I think he sees himself building shelters and spearing fish and living off the land," he said.

"I will let him do that from the comfort of the cottages on the neighbouring Marble Island."

The pair flew into Rockhampton yesterday morning before doing a show from the Hot FM station.

They will fly to neighbouring Marble Island before taking a small dingy to the People's Island to broadcast their landing.
