Gympie takes on NZ side

CRICKET: Gympie again played host to an international touring cricket team on Monday, with New Zealand's Ashburton College First XI taking on the Gympie under-18 team in a one-dayer at Albert Park.

"Ashburton come here every couple of years, and actually asked us if they could include Gympie on their tour of South East Queensland," Gympie coach Trevor Mahaffey said.

"We're more than happy to host teams from other countries, and it's always a fun day for both sides.

"Gympie always seems to go really well against them too, and it's a great experience for our players.

"It's been an annual event for the last four or five years, with teams from New Zealand South Africa stopping in at Gympie."

Batting first, Ashburton could only manage 105, with Gympie dismissing them in 37 overs.

Opening bowler Andre Cave led the attack well with two wickets, while Anthony Brogdon took 2-4 off his three overs, but it was young leg-spinner Vasili Exarhos doing most of the damage with a five-wicket haul.

In reply, Gympie chased down the target in the 43rd over, but it was a thrilling finish as they scored the winning runs with just one wicket in hand.

Captain Zach Gagen lasted throughout the whole innings to finish with an unbeaten half century and guide his team to victory.

"It was lucky for us that we had Zach stay in to anchor the innings," Mahaffey said.

"Ashburton's opening batsman, Michael Burton, batted really well but we got him out for 25.

"That's where they lost it in the end - not having someone to stay in for the long haul like Zach did for us."
