Guilty plea rejected for nurse accused of assaulting patient

A NURSE accused of assaulting a patient at a Wacol mental health facility has had her guilty plea knocked back.

Belinda Jane Sugars was due to be sentenced after pleading guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday to three common assault charges.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Adrian Lange said Sugars allegedly slapped a female patient at the Park Centre for Mental Health in 2010.

Sugars is also accused of putting the 59-year-old patient with cerebral palsy and schizophrenia at risk of choking because of the way she violently forced her to take her medication.

The sentencing hearing was aborted when Sugars said her lawyer told her she had to plead guilty.

Magistrate Anne Thacker rejected her guilty plea.

The case is expected to be set down for a full hearing.

The matter will be mentioned on July 10.
