Granny Graham ruled ward

STEPH Shannon has very fond memories of the quilts being in the Sunshine Ward at Ipswich Hospital.

Steph retired as head nurse of the ward after almost 50 years. Sister Edith Graham was the sister in charge when Sister Shannon arrived.

Sister Graham was fondly referred to as Granny Graham by the student nurses, but her colleague later found she didn't approve of the nickname.

"The quilts are finding their rightful place now at the Ipswich Hospital Museum," Steph said.

"I was custodian for years and Graham (Sister Graham) before me; they would have been handed to Graham.

"She tenderly took care of them and would take them home - they were never stored in the ward - and then she brought them back. They were put on display every Christmas, Easter and any time a dignitary was visiting the hospital.

"I was a really raw recruit at the time and she said: 'Listen Shannon - she called me Shannon - whatever you do, take care of those quilts'.

"And that's what I always did when she retired."
