Goodna's Sapphires aiming higher after local derby win

THE professional approach in this year's unbeaten Goodna Sapphires netball team is clearly visible in captain Robyn Walsh.

She's thoughtful in her responses, supportive of her team and leads from the front.

So after beating the Ipswich Flyers 61-35 in last week's South East Queensland Cup local derby, experienced Australian indoor team skipper Walsh was quick to get back to business.

With her team in second spot on percentages behind Caboolture, her focus is on Thursday night's opponents Metropolitan Districts.

"We haven't actually seen any of their (Metro's) games but knowing that they drew with the Flyers gives us a bit of confidence that we should go okay,'' Walsh said.

However, she's taking nothing for granted with the Sapphires mindful of playing current competition leaders Caboolture a week later.

"It's always nice to go through the season undefeated,'' she said. "But that doesn't count when it comes to finals.''

As for the local derby, Walsh said it was a pleasing result after only holding a narrow lead at halftime.

Sapphires shooters Renae Kalalo and Chrissy Peever were on target.

Before the match at the State Netball Centre, Walsh was careful not to overplay the importance of the game between the city's two netball powers.

"We weren't making it anything that it wasn't but we were happy with the win,'' she said.

She also appreciated the extra crowd support last Thursday night.

"We just gelled and got the job done,'' she said.

"We never really start real strong in any of games. We just lead into it and it just falls into place.''

After the Sapphires play Metropolitan Districts in their 6.30pm clash on Thursday night, the fifth-placed Flyers are hoping to be the first team to end Caboolture's winning run at 8pm.
