Goodna okay with the 'underdog' tag

ALBY Talipeau has a great affinity with the North Ipswich Reserve.

He has won two grand finals there from two attempts already.

He has the chance for a third tomorrow for Goodna against Brothers in the Ipswich Rugby League A-grade decider.

The first of Talipeau's titles was with Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup grand final in 2008, when the Magpies beat the more fancied Ipswich Jets.

The next was as captain of Swifts when they downed Brothers in 2010, breaking their four year stranglehold on the prize.

This time he is attempting to do it as a Goodna Eagle, though Talipeau insists on talking down his team's chances.

"It's a tough ask," he said.

"Brothers have been the benchmark all season. It will be hard to knock them off.

"We've had an inconsistent year.

"But the last six weeks, training-wise, has been a different story. We know we can have a good crack."

The past six weeks, Talipeau has played five-eighth, rather than hooker, where he spent much of the season.

"It's a different role for me," he said. "Just telling the forwards where to go then trying to kick it out and help with their recovery."

The change has been instigated by Sione Faumuina. Since getting injured, the former Kiwi international has taken over much of the tactical coaching duties.

Talipeau and Faumuina go back a long way, having played together for the Junior Kiwis (under 20) in 2000

"Sione really knows how to maximise our team," Talipeau said. "He's changed the whole game plan.

"It has seemed to work well with the Pacific Islander guys. We've clicked.

"I wouldn't say we're at our peak. We haven't put a full 80 minutes together all season."

It will have to happen tomorrow if the Eagles are to send the likes of skipper Fa Tauaa into retirement on a happy note.

Goodna will happily go into the match as underdogs with few other than the faithful tipping them to win.

"I think a lot of people have written us off," Talipeau said.

"Against Norths and Swifts and whether we were up for it with our big forwards.

"We thrive on that - thinking no-one gives us any hope.''
