Duo goes for Tamworth gold

A FRASER Coast band is going for gold - they are up for one of county music's greatest honours.

Local duo, The Bobkatz has been nominated for not one but two Golden Guitar Awards at the upcoming Tamworth Country Music Festival, along with names such as Keith Urban, Kasey Chambers and Adam Harvey.

The Bobkatz have been nominated for Best Group or Duo, which puts them in an elite category of producing some of the finest country music in the nation.

They have also been nominated for Best Heritage Song, an award which recognises the songs which speak about aspects of Australia's history.

The Old HR is the Bobkatz's entry in this category, a song written by Gary Koehler.

It is a nostalgic piece about Gary's first car, and has proven to be highly popular in country music radio stations across the nation.

"It really resonates with people ... everyone loves their first car," he said.

Rob Mackay is the other member of Bobkatz, and he said the nominations came as a shock to the duo.

"We started getting texts saying 'congratulations' and we had no idea what they were for," he said, as the pair sat around a replica Golden Guitar they "acquired" the last time they attended the awards.

Hopefully, on January 28, 2012, they will have the real things to bring back to the Fraser Coast.
