Gold Coast Airport Marathon 2009

THE 31st annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon will take over the Gold Coast on Sunday July 5 2009 and it has a brand new course, race and home.

The event, which boasted 21,000 competitors from 30 countries last year, is well known for it's flat terrain and mild temperatures despite being in winter, making it a favourite for many runners.

Check out the preview of the 2009 Gold Coast Airport Marathon.

What am I in for?

If you are planning on running the full 42.195km, the course this year will stretch all the way to Burleigh, rather than a turnaround at Miami like previous years.

For those we don't have the puff for the full course there is the Asics Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km Run and the new Gold Coast Bulletin 5km Challenge (run or walk), replacing the 7.5km walk, to cut your teeth on. Other events include the Wheelchair Half Marathon and the Queensland Health Junior dashes of either 4km or 2.25km.

Entries for the Gold Coast Airport Marathon opened on Tuesday, April 14 and close at 5pm Friday June 12 for mail entries, 5pm Tuesday June 30 for online entries or 5pm July 4 in person at the Registration Centres.

Race kits are to be collected from either the Gold Coast or Brisbane registration centres (see below) but cannot be collected on the day of the race, this must be done prior. Once you have entered the race, you will receive an email with you eTicket. You must present your eTicket when you collect your race kit. If you are picking up a race kit for someone else, you will need their eTicket and written permission from them for you to collect the kit.

Entry costs

If you live in Australia or New Zealand the full marathon will cost you $100 if you register before June 3 or $120 after June 3. The half marathon the early bird cost is $75 or $95 for late registration. For registration fees for other events or international visitors, visit the Gold Coast Marathon fees page.

Registration centres

The Brisbane registration centre will be open for one day only at Suncorp Piazza, South Bank Parklands on Sunday June 28 from 9am to 4pm.

The Gold Coast registration centre at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on the corner of the Gold Coast Highway and TE Peters Drive, Broadbeach will open on Thursday July 2 from 5pm to 8pm, Friday July 3 from 8am to 6pm and Saturday July 4 from 8am to 5pm.

If you are participating in the marathon, please ensure you collect your race kit from one of the registration centres as there is no race day kit collection.

The prizes

If you happen to be good enough to win the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, you will take home $10,000 for your effort. On top of that there is a bonus of another $15,000 if you can finish in less than two hours and 10 minutes for men or two hours and 30 minutes for women.

For those running the full marathon for the first time you could win return trips to Kuala Lumpur if you are the fastest of all the debut runners.

Queensland residents who ran an event last year also have the chance to win two nights accomodation on the Sunshine Coast.

For more information on prizes, see the Gold Coast Airport Marathon's Prizes and Rewards page.

How should I prepare?

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon offers free training diaries on their website to help you be in prime condition for your race, no matter what your level. A hint though, if you haven't run a marathon before, it may be a good idea to start with a shorter event and work your way up to the marathon next year.
