A Place to Call Home has a new address on pay TV

A PICNIC protest in Maryborough turned into a bittersweet celebration with news axed Aussie drama A Place to Call Home would continue - but on pay TV.

Foxtel has given the former Seven Network show a new home, with reports it will broadcast the program on SoHo.

Picnics calling for the much-loved cancelled show to be reinstated were held simultaneously across the country yesterday, after Seven announced it would dump the program after just one-and-a-half seasons.

Fraser Coast picnic organiser Mary Bird said while many members of the group were disappointed the show would no longer be on free TV, most people were pragmatic and pleased the show's cast and crew could continue working.

"We're more happy about the continuation of the series (above all else)," she said.

Ms Bird said thousands of fans from around the world had fought to have A Place to Call Home saved.

"We are very proud of what we've achieved because we are ordinary people coming together for a common goal," she said.

Ms Bird said the show's cast had been supportive of the group, with stars Noni Hazlehurst and Ben Winspear even video-conferencing the group via Skype as thanks.

"Well done everyone who fought for this, you've made history," Ms Bird said.

"Once the show is virtually dead it's hard for it to get resurrected."
