Hairless dog one of 14 in Australia

FOR most, a typical dog show would conjure up thoughts of perfectly preened and fluffy canines but Toowoomba owner Kim Haddon is promoting a rare hairless breed.

Ms Haddon's pup Chamuco is a xoloitzcuintle - or xolo for short - is a Mexican hairless breed, an intriguing addition to the show circuit.

Chamuco is one of only 14 standard-sized xolos in Australia and at just five and a half months is helping Ms Haddon promote the breed in Queensland.

"They're an ancient breed and they were used for sacrifice and eaten in some instances in Aztec culture," Ms Haddon said.

"I got Chamuco from a breeder in Western Australia who was the first to import xolos.

"People can be a bit taken aback by the hairlessness but he is pretty placid and has a nice temperament and lives with my Pomeranians and Burmese mountain dogs."

Named for the Aztec god Xolotl, these dogs were thought to be guardians and have been dated to 3500 years ago.

An exhibitor and judge, Ms Haddon said she became curious to own a xolo after judging one at a New South Wales show.

"The first time I put my hand on one it sort of sent shivers down my spine. In a way it felt ancient," she said.

"I was intrigued and kept in touch with the owner and one day she asked if I wanted to have one to promote the breed here.

"We do have to moisturise him every day and put a sun shirt on him.

"He'll be used as a breeding dog eventually and he's being watched by breeders in Mexico who seem to think he'll be a special one."
