Gillow on track for award

BELLI Park's Shara Gillow is a finalist for Cycling Australia's elite road cyclist of the year award for women.

Gillow, 23, has had a stunning season, with a string of good results in preparation for next year's Olympic Games in London.

She claimed the road race and time trial double at the 2011 Oceania Road Championships in Victoria in March. On the road she rode away from the peleton twice to win the 116km event.

Gillow, who took up competitive cycling only three years ago, has been a revelation in Europe this season.

She had an impressive win in the second stage on the way to a top-10 finish in the Giro Donne (Tour of Italy) before claiming a podium place in the week-long Thuringen Rundfahrt women's tour in Germany.

Gillow is one of three finalists for the women's major award, to be presented in Sydney tomorrow night. Her challengers are Rochelle Gilmore and Chloe Hosking.

Tour de France winner Cadel Evans is among those vying for the men's major award, after a successful season for Australian cyclists.

"2011 has been a phenomenal year for across all ages and disciplines," Cycling Australia chief executive, Graham Fredericks, said.

"The Cyclones (the Australian squad) claimed 35 world titles and if they weren't topping medal tables at world championships they were on podiums at World Cups and international calendar events from the boards to the bitumen and on to the dirt."

The finalists includes track sprint queen Anna Meares, who is one of four riders to claim three world titles in 2011.
