Negus criticises focus on leadership in election campaign

SEX, religion and politics are the top subjects George Negus was told not to talk about if he wanted to make good friends.

But at 18 he said he worked out those were the only topics to talk about - and they were the subject of conversation at the Hot Business Breakfast on Wednesday at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre.

The Australian journalist, who has seen it all and heard it all in his half century career, said he couldn't help but touch on politics.

"Penny Wong epitomises everything in this country about change .. .a young, gay, Asian woman with a partner in a position of incredible authority in this country .. .that's good change," he said.

But overall, he said "I've never seen Australian politics as ridiculous as it is now".

He criticised the focus on leadership in the campaign.

"How do you vote?" he asked the 100-strong crowd.

"Find out why Rudd joined the Labor party and why Tony didn't and then make up your own silly minds."
