Gatton Imperial Hotel set to become backpackers hostel

GATTON'S Imperial Hotel is set for a $1.7 million makeover that will see it be transformed into the region's newest backpacker hostel.

Gatton businessman Eskander Alokaily, who bought the closed hotel last year, said the hostel would be a real winner for the Lockyer Valley.

"As Australia's premier food growing region, the Lockyer Valley has a large number of transient worker; and the longer they stay, the more they spend money locally which is a great boost for local tourism and businesses," Mr Alokaily said.

"There will be increased job opportunities throughout the construction phase and again with staffing for the new facility."

Mr Alokaily said he would restore facade of the building to its former glory.

"The transformation of the Imperial Hotel will take place in two phases," he said.

"Phase one will see the construction of 14 rooms come to fruition housing close to 50 people and will be operational during construction of phase two which includes an additional 40 rooms in a two storey development catering for 80 people," he said.

"Once completed, around 130 backpackers can call the Imperial home with additional car parking being provided at the rear of the building."

The hotel closed down in early 2013 and the Gatton Star is seeking clarification whether the pub would be maintained as part of the new facility.
