Gallen shines as Sharks shock

A DOGGED Cronulla frustrated hot favourites the Roosters to pull off a shock 10-4 win at Shark Park.

It was the second time this season Cronulla has upset the premiership front-runners who choked under a mountain of errors.

The Roosters took the lead in the first half thanks to a runaway 90m try by five-eighth James Maloney after he swooped on a dropped ball.

Cronulla lock Luke Lewis reminded New South Wales selectors of his value, crossing for his 100th career try just after half time, before penalties to Michael Gordon in the 65th and 79th minutes secured victory for the Sharks.

"We always lift against the good sides, but we have to do it every week," said Sharks skipper Paul Gallen in his first game for six weeks.

Despite the lay-off, Gallen has already told Blues coach Laurie Daley he would be available for Origin game two in Melbourne next Wednesday.

If there were any doubts about Gallen's fitness, he blew them away with an incredible game-high 266m with 35 tackles. It wasn't quite good enough for man-of-the-match honours, however, with that award going to Wade Graham who produced 224m and 31 tackles.

Roosters centre Michael Jennings turned in another average performance and must surely be under pressure from a host of challengers, including Rabbitohs star Dylan Walker, to retain his place in the NSW line-up.
