Four plates in face for Sam Burgess in surgery

RABBITOHS part-owner Russell Crowe has revealed there were complications during surgery for Clive Churchill Medal winner Sam Burgess.

Burgess (pictured) suffered a fractured cheekbone and a fractured eye socket in the first hit-up of Sunday's grand final win after a clash with fellow Englishman James Graham and underwent an operation.

Crowe tweeted yesterday that Burgess had four plates inserted during the surgery.

"Sam Burgess update. Complicated surgery. 4 plates," Crowe tweeted yesterday

"Insisted the nurses called him Clive.

"Hahaha the sparkly eyed man. What a champion."

Burgess is expected to be sidelined for about two months with the injuries before beginning his rugby union career with English premiership side Bath.

Meanwhile, Peter Holmes a Court has confirmed negotiations are under way for the sale of his share of the Souths. Media mogul and Sydney Roosters supporter James Packer is reportedly keen to buy Holmes a Court's stake in the club.

There was bad news on the injury front too for Australia, with Johnathan Thurston the latest to withdraw from the Kangaroos' squad for this month's Four Nations tournament.

The Cowboys confirmed would not play because of a shoulder injury.

"It was a really difficult decision to have to make but in the end, the doctor really took it out of my hands when I saw him yesterday," Thurston said in a statement.
