Opposition leader rules Davis out as Ashgrove candidate

SATURDAY: Former Queensland Government MP Chris Davis will not be Labor's candidate in Premier Campbell Newman's Brisbane seat of Ashgrove, Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says.

Dr Davis, the former assistant health minister, quit the Brisbane seat of Stafford in May, triggering a by-election last weekend where the LNP suffered a massive loss.

Dr Davis yesterday resigned from the LNP and said he was in talks with Labor about the possibility of running in Mr Newman's seat of Ashgrove.

However, Ms Palaszczuk said Dr Davis was not a Labor member.

"Let me make it very clear - it will be a Labor member who runs in the seat of Ashgrove," she said.

FRIDAY: Former LNP member for Stafford Chris Davis says he is discussing the option of running for Labor at the next state election, possibly against Premier Campbell Newman in the seat of Ashgrove.

Dr Davis told 7.30 Queensland he wanted to work as part of a team for the people of the state and that he had informally discussed his options with ALP state secretary Anthony Chisholm.

"All we've done is open the investigation of the potential, nothing else," he said.

Dr Davis said he had just resigned from the LNP.

He said he understood that former Labor member for Ashgrove, Kate Jones, remained the party's first choice to run against Mr Newman, but that if she chose not to run he would be happy to do so.
