Former AFL name Liam Jurrah jailed for Alice Springs assault

FORMER Melbourne star Liam Jurrah was yesterday sentenced to six months in jail, suspended after three months, for an assault on a woman during a fight in Alice Springs in March.

The 24-year-old, and co-accused Mathius Walker, pleaded guilty to one charge of unlawful assault on Jillian Brown.

Two other assault charges and one cause serious harm charge against Jurrah were dropped.

During the hearing, Jurrah's lawyer had told the court the footballer was the victim of a sustained attack by other people outside a 24-hour store.

He said during the attack, Ms Brown threw a rock at the car Jurrah had arrived in, smashing the rear window.

The prosecution told the court Jurrah and Walker then followed Ms Brown before Walker punched her repeatedly.

It heard Jurrah also punched the woman twice, one of the blows to the face knocking her to the ground.

While he described the assault as outrageous, Magistrate David Bamber, in sentencing Jurrah, took into account his early plea and prior good conduct.

Walker was sentenced to seven months jail.
