Flying cars and other myths

YOU may have seen an email going around recently about cars flying through the air and wondered whether or not to believe the incredible claims.

It's an old email claiming cars hydroplaning while using cruise control can take off through the air and it's been doing the rounds for years.

Joe Fitzgerald.
Joe Fitzgerald.

Like the one about people getting cancer from substances secreted in the upholstery of new cars. That's about due for another run.

The genius of any urban myth is that it contains just enough truth to make the whole story seem plausible.

It's amazing that in the information age this stuff keeps doing the rounds because it's so easy to find out the truth.

In the case of the flying car, hydroplaning does cause the wheels to spin rapidly without gaining traction. But it has nothing to do with cruise control and certainly won't result in a flying vehicle.

If there is sufficient water on the road to cause hydroplaning, it is going to happen regardless of whether cruise control is engaged or not.

So before you go spreading the next incredible "fact" that arrives in your inbox, go online to a reputable source and check for yourself.
