Flyers focus on Ipswich finals after gallant Cup effort

AS a number of Ipswich Flyers players prepare to help their club sides in this weekend's netball grand finals, they can be proud of their latest representative season.

While disappointed to fall one game short of the South East Queensland Cup grand final, Flyers captain Emilie McInally saw plenty to be heartened by.

"It was not the desired outcome but I was very proud of how the team played and fought hard,'' he said after the 53-43 semi-final loss to unbeaten competition leaders Goodna Sapphires.

"We were up 13-10 after the first quarter and up by one at halftime.

"Across the board there were a lot of gutsy efforts.''

Yet to beat Goodna in two years of the Queesnsland Premier League SEQ Cup competition, McInally acknowledged they had some experienced players that were hard to keep quiet.

But she said getting to the semi-finals for the second year in a row was a great achievement for the largely home-bred Flyers.

"We have a great mix of players, young and returning players,'' the ever-dependable skipper said.

"We did well to gel together and find our strengths and weaknesses.''

With no Flyers retirements announced, McInally said she would wait to see what the new year brings for her representative career.

"There has been some discussions about a new format next year. We're unsure on what it will be,'' she said.

With the SEQ Cup campaign over for another year, the Flyers focus returns to Saturday's Ipswich competition preliminary finals.

Joining McInally in the Aztecs team are Melissa Beutel, Skye Sippel, Bridget Cumming and Rachael Sarra.

Aztecs 1 will play a Rebels 1 side featuring Macy McColm, Masilina Kurukitoga and Kirsty Brennan.

The top division final is at 2pm on Saturday.
