Flood fear rises with downpour

HORRIFIC memories were relived yesterday morning when Ipswich was slammed with heavy rain, the likes of which had not been seen since the mid-January flood.

Storms lashed the region in the morning and afternoon, producing 5.4 millimetres of rain.

The grey skies will continue throughout the week, with rainfall expected daily. But The Weather Channel forecaster Dick Whitaker said the rainfall posed minimal flood threat, consisting of occasional showers, not constant rain.

He said residents could expect to see only limited sunshine during the coming days, with between one and five millimetres of rain predicted to fall each day.

“There is no heavy rainfall forecast for the next month, but that could change in a few weeks’ time,” Mr Whitaker said.
