Fire can't halt celebration of couple's burning love

LAURA Williams and Martin McKendrick will never forget their wedding day, and not for the usual reasons.

After a seven-year engagement, the Ipswich couple decided to tie the knot in front of family and friends at Lake Cooroibah on Noosa North Shore on Saturday.

But a raging bushfire close by had something to say about that.

The blaze, which has been burning since Thursday, almost ruined their big moment when they were told to evacuate by Queensland Parks and Wildlife rangers, who were backburning.

But the bride-to-be was not about to let that stop the most important day of her life.

"It threw a bit of a spanner in the works," Laura said.

"But everyone just came together and moved all the chairs and things back up to the Noosa North Shore Retreat. It was a beautiful setting through, it really was. We got some great pictures with the smoke billowing in the background."

Laura praised the retreat's events manager, Melissa Byram, for her quick response.

Shortly after the ceremony, Laura and her party were asked to leave the area again due to the fire, but not without a souvenir photo.

"We got a photo with the rangers," she said.

"I'll never forget our wedding day."

The wedding capped off a dramatic time for the couple. They lost everything when floods tore through their Ipswich home last year.
