Fire crews called to building in CBD after smoke sighting

THE appearance of smoke coming from an inner-city Ipswich building sparked curiosity among passers-by this morning.

Police said staff in the Safe City monitoring room noticed what appeared to be smoke coming from the roof of the former Big White building in the Top of Town section of Brisbane St about 10.10am.

Police and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service personnel converged on the old furniture store as inquisitive onlookers gathered around.

Fire and rescue officers used a thermal imaging camera to find out the source of the smoke and discovered it was actually dust from sand-blasting inside the building.

A police spokesman said workers used an industrial fan to blow out the dust and that gave the appearance of smoke coming out of the building.
