Fire breaks out in Toowoomba park overnight

FIRE crews were called to a blaze in a Toowoomba park overnight.

A tree and grass fire broke out at Clewley Park, opposite Toowoomba Hospital at 9pm.

Two crews were called to the scene and the blaze was extinguished by 11pm.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency spokeswoman said if the hot and windy weather persisted today, it had the potential to reignite.

"Crews went back to the scene at 1.15am to make sure it was safe and although a lot of water and fire-fighting foam was used, it is still smouldering so has the potential to reignite."

The Bureau of Meteorology released a fire warning for the region today as a "vigorous trough lies over south west Queensland."

"The trough will continue to shift slowly eastwards over the southern interior of the state. Hot, dry conditions will combine with fresh and gusty northwesterly winds east of the trough to result in severe fire dangers over the Maranoa, Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts."

Residents are urged to avoid Clewley Park today and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
