Finals spots on line in Ipswich grudge match

A SPOT in the Gee Shield semi-finals is on the line when St Peter Claver College and Redbank Plains State High firsts teams do battle on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams head in without key players due to injury.

SPCC has yet to play a game in the Gee Shield due to two forfeits, while Redbank Plains have won two and lost one, against pool leaders St Mary's last week.

The top two from the pool play finals next term.

Last year both teams reached the semi-finals, before bowing out with losses to eventual winners Ipswich State High.

To make up for their lack of football SPCC played a trial game against Marsden High's seconds last week, winning 24-6.

"It was the first hit out for our boys with a complete squad," SPCC coach Todd Riggs said.

"We've been training well and the boys played well against Marsden."

Riggs and Redbank Plains coach Michael Armstrong know each other well, so know what to expect.

"Mick brings discipline," Riggs said. "They'll be big and strong and tough.

"Every time we've played them they've been close battles. It will come down to which side is able to play better at crucial moments."

Armstrong was happy with the way his boys dug in, in their 24-18 loss to St Mary's last week.

"We were low on troops last week and copped a couple of early injuries to key players but didn't give in. Our perseverance and commitment to keep turning up for each other has been a highlight of the year," Armstrong said.

"We need to win this week to make the semi finals and it will be a tough ask against a more experienced outfit. Injuries to a few key players will also make things tough but no excuses.

"We will have 13 players just like them and they need to do their job.

"The result will look after itself.

The match is the last of a tripleheader between the schools at Redbank Plains, following clashes between seconds and grade 10 teams.
