Humble beginnings in common for Telstra award finalists
FOUR Sunshine Coast businesses with perseverance at their core - including a pilot training facility and a lovingly-restored historic pioneer village - are among the 22 finalists in the 2013 Telstra Queensland Business Awards.
Becker Helicopter Services had humble beginnings in a run-down tin shed at Noosa airport; but the service quality and ability of the owners Jan and Mike Becker to break into training, once exclusively the domain of the military, helped it earn a finalist nomination this year.
Director Captain Jan Becker said the globally-recognised business was spurred on by a lack of innovative and visionary helicopter training companies.
"We had a dream to change the face of helicopter pilot training worldwide," she said.
Like Becker Helicopter Services, fellow finalist Eniquest started with little funding from a tin shed in Warana and has grown to be a supplier of locally manufactured power generation products to large entities around the country, including the Australian Defence Force and BHP.
Another finalist, Plastec Australia, is one of Australia's largest manufacturers and suppliers of specialised plumbing devices.
Based at Caloundra, the company has more than 1000 products thanks to the persistent research and development focus of its chief executive and founder, Syd Hawthorne.
The stunning restoration of Bli Bli House at Pacific Paradise is the result of 12 years of tight finances and painstaking renovation by owners Phil and Merryl Greenbury.
Today, this Telstra Business Awards finalist is a restaurant venue and B&B that is a much sought after photo location for magazines.
"It is so important that we recognise the businesses that support our local communities and celebrate the significant contribution they make by creating jobs, driving innovation and bringing their expertise and innovations to customers - locally and all over the world," Telstra Country Wide Sunshine Coast general manager Kris Carver said.
Winners will be announced at the Hilton Brisbane on July 16.
