Field goal gives Seagulls win

TWEED Heads Seagulls registered their first win for the Queensland Rugby League Intrust Cup season on Saturday, outlasting the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles 7-6 in their game at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

It was a tough outing for both sides and they struggled to break through the opposition line.

Scores were locked at 0-0 at the halftime break, and both teams would have hoped for a more positive start to the second half.

Scoring again proved difficult, despite the attacking arsenal on display in both sides.

The Sunshine Coast finally broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Dale Middleton crossed for the home side.

He then added the extras with his conversion to give his side a hard-fought 6-0 lead.

It was short-lived however, with big Seagulls forward Michael Henderson scoring the first try for Tweed Heads just over 10 minutes later.

Beau Henry's conversion saw the sides again level pegging on the scoreboard.

As they did for much of last season when they claimed the minor premiership, the gritty Seagulls managed to remain in the game with the field goal from Brad Davis in the closing stages proving to be just enough to see them sing the team song for the first time this season.

Next week, the Seagulls will again hit the road for a showdown with the Mackay Cutters who are also coming off a win.

Tweed Heads Seagulls 7 (Michael Henderson try; Beau Henry goal; Brad Davis field goal) def Sunshine Coast 6 (Dale Middleton try; Dale Middleton goal).
