Fever struck down by Firebirds
THE Queensland Firebirds are not going to give up their trans Tasman Netball Championship crown without a fight.
They proved that by crushing Perth's West Coast Fever 63-43 in Brisbane yesterday to keep their finals hopes alive.
The Queenslanders showed no signs of rustiness after the bye last week as they increased their lead at every break on the way to completing the double over the Fever.
Goal attack Natalie Medhurst led the way with a career best 38 goals from 45 attempts, nine assists and three interceptions. Jamaican sharpshooter Romelda Aiken chipped in with 25 from 31 shots, while Caitlin Bassett, with 35 goals from 40 attempts, starred in a losing team.
Despite the impressive win, the Firebirds remain sixth and are still two points out of the top-four with just one round to go before the finals.
Winning that game won't be any easy assignment either. The Firebirds head to Hamilton to play competition leaders, New Zealand's Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, in the final round on July 2.
