Father-daughter bond extends to family drug trade

A FATHER and daughter embraced in the dock at Maroochydore District Court before their drug dealing enterprise led to them being separated.

Timothy Albert Johansen, 54, was then led into custody while Rachel Maria Johansen, 19, walked tearfully from the courtroom to freedom.

They pleaded guilty before Judge John Robertson on Monday to trafficking marijuana from their Tinbeerwah home.

The court heard Mr Johansen had been selling marijuana to about 15 customers for a little more than a year before police conducted a raid on June 1 last year.

His daughter had been involved in the business for the final three months leading up to the raid.

Police found marijuana and cash in Mr Johansen's room and lesser amounts of the same in his daughter's room.

They both cooperated with police, with Mr Johansen detailing how he had made between $700 and $750 a month from his trade.

The court heard Miss Johansen had taken on a marketing role in the business and assisted her dad with selling the drug.

They were both using marijuana, with Mr Johansen telling police he would rather his daughter got it from him than on the street.

Defence barrister Mark McAuley said his client Mr Johansen had been using marijuana to manage his bi-polar disorder after he stopped taking his prescribed mediation.

Mr McAuley said his client was addicted to marijuana when he was caught but had since abstained from using it.

He said Mr Johansen was selling marijuana to raise money to pay for a nasal operation his son needed.

Defence barrister Stephen Courtney said his client Miss Johansen was working as a cleaner and studying business management at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Mr Courtney said Miss Johansen had used marijuana but was not addicted to it.

"The principal offender is her father," Mr Courtney said.

"He should have been the voice of reason."

Judge Robertson sentenced Mr Johansen to three years in jail, to be suspended after eight months.

Miss Johansen was placed on a two-year probation order.

No conviction was recorded against her.
