Family reunion story brought back memories

SEVERAL weeks ago I noticed a group photo of the Goleby Family reunion, published in the Advertiser.

I remember in 1939, Edith Goleby, who seemed like an old lady to me at the time and was a member of the Goleby Family, used to come to the old Ipswich Central Girls' School, Brisbane Road, where I was a pupil aged 11.

Miss Gooch, a very gracious lady, was our Head Teacher at the time.

Mrs Goleby used to take us for singing lessons and I remember her teaching us choir pieces and singing in a big Combined State Schools Patriotic concert in the Wintergarden Theatre.

The concert was held during war-time, 1941, to raise funds.

When I was 11 and my sister 10, she taught us a duet in two parts. "Cheer Up Do" was quite a challenge to us.

I still have an original programme of that concert. I wonder if there are still people living who remember?

They would have to be well into their 80s now.
