Explosion in West Mackay remains a mystery

THE Mackay Crime Watch Facebook page went into overdrive last night as someone heard a "loud explosion noise towards Paget area".

Nadine Pitt commented saying that her children were scared.

"OMG my kids are freaking out that last one was so close to us my garage shook," she said.

Kelley Watt commented saying that she saw two flashes of bright light.

"Heard two of the noises along with bright flashes of light, two fire trucks went past our place in West Mackay and can see smoke from our back yard over towards the Paget area. Thinking maybe someone trying to set off their own fireworks and they went wrong," she said.

Senior Sergeant Mark Dwyer of Mackay police said there was an explosion at about 8.45 last night.

"We had an informant in Donaldson Street in West Mackay who heard a loud explosion but they weren't sure what the noise was or where it came from," he said.

"Police door-knocked the Donaldson St, West Mackay area but residents weren't aware of what caused the explosion and nothing was found by police.

"It possibly could have been fire crackers."

A QFRS spokesman said two fire crew attended the scene with police but nothing was found.
