Exciting social time as footy fever kicks in

WHAT a great time of the year it is for sports fans.

The AFL grand final today and the second NRL grand-final elimination tonight.

It's a great social time as well, with many of us heading to a friend's place to share a cool drink and a barbecue while watching the big games.

I remember when I was in Canberra in 1989 on a hot grand final afternoon.

The Raiders were going for their first premiership and I was dispatched to the shops for last-minute supplies an hour before kick-off.

The streets were empty and the shops were only occupied by unhappy staffers.

Everyone was locked and loaded in front of their television sets hoping that the Raiders could win eight games in a row and take the trophy.

It's history now that the Green Machine did exactly that and in so doing made heroes of players such as Belcher, Stuart, Daley and Meninga.

It always makes it special when it's your team that has made it to the big day allowing you to wear your jersey proudly for the days proceeding.

Unfortunately my team was North Sydney and it was axed from the competition years ago.

It only won one premiership back in 1922. Yes, unfortunately my father introduced me to a loser but at least the Raiders gave me plenty to cheer about.
